my Saturday radio show, Healthy Solutions has been both a challenge
and a blessing. As a “health reporter”, I have come
to appreciate in a new way the truth to the well-known phrase,
“The more I know, the more I realize how much I don’t
know!”
It has been a great privilege to interview many dynamic health
professionals in the course of hosting our weekly show, Health
Solutions Today. In this article, I am featuring some important
health information from Dr. James Balch, author of The Super
Anti-Oxidants.
Rusting & Rotting
Our bodies are metabolic machines that turn oxygen into energy.
In the process there are waste products called “free radicals”
that are formed. These substances are reactive and will wreak
havoc in the cells of our body if they are not removed. In essence,
they make our body both “rust and rot”. What’s
the solution? Antioxidants! These powerhouse nutrients clean
up free radicals and carry them away from the body. Where damage
has already occurred, they come in and correct the problem.
In his book, Dr. Balch explains in fascinating detail how a
variety of antioxidant nutrients work in miraculous ways to
protect us from a host of diseases. In fact, he says that there
is one theory that almost all disease is an issue of a compromised
immune system. And a healthy immune system is dependent on a
comprehensive and regular supply of antioxidants. How do we
get those nutrients? Eat as many whole, natural foods as we
can. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds –
foods the way God designed them!
I love what Dr. Balch says at the beginning of his book: “When
God created humans, He also provided all the nutrients we needed
to maintain a healthy body. He did not hide those nutrients
from us, and he didn’t package them separately and write
a book to explain exactly how each one function. He simply put
an abundance of nutrients in the foods that we would eat.”
As I say week after week on Healthy Solutions, there is an endless
supply of information about why we should get passionate about
eating seven to nine fruits and vegetables each and everyday
for the rest of our lives! And when we can’t (or don’t)
there are some great supplements that can help us fill in the
gaps. BUT… man will never be able to replicate what God
has done perfectly…package food in exact formulations
to nourish us completely.
While his FIRST recommendation is to eat your antioxidants in
a variety of God-given foods, I have also listed a few of Dr.
Balch’s supplement recommendations to help you stop the
“rusting and rotting” process going on in your body:

Small Steps
At the end of each week I have gathered more health and nutrition
facts than I can possibly remember – let alone implement.
As I consider how to improve my health and be a better steward
of the body God has given me, I am convinced that my “motto”
is a good one. Instead of becoming overwhelmed, I simply pick
one or two new ways to notch up my lifestyle and remember…Small
steps taken consistently add up in a BIG way over time. I challenge
you to take a few small steps this week! Eat a few more natural
foods, drink more water, add a new supplement to your regime.
And remember…God delights in each small step we take!
